OnePlus 3 features guide: How to customise and remove the Shelf

One of OnePlus' changes to Android Marshmallow is the Oxygen OS 'Shelf', which can be brought up by flicking your finger right across the home screen. This gives you fast access to your favourite contacts and apps, plus essential info and widgets.

You can customise the OnePlus 3 Shelf in a few ways. For instance, you can long-press on one of the widgets and then drag it up or down the Shelf when it 'pops' free. You can turn weather support on or off by tapping the dots in the top left. And if you want to disable the Shelf, just long-press any free space on your desktops, tap 'customise' and then hit the Shelf toggle that pops up.

OnePlus 3 features guide: How to remove or edit the Google Search bar

We love Google, but the Google Search bar on the OnePlus 3's desktops is like a dog turd on a freshly mowed lawn. It sticks out and it's rather unattractive.

Thankfully you can easily make the Google Search bar transparent or remove it entirely by long-pressing on any free space on your desktops and then tapping 'Customise' in the menu that pops up. Flick left from the first menu that appears and you can set the Search bar to on, transparent or off.

OnePlus 3 features guide: How to customise the OnePlus 3's buttons

Head to the OnePlus 3's settings and tap the 'Buttons' menu and you can customise the phone's hard buttons beneath the screen.

By default, the button to the left of the OnePlus 3's home button (and fingerprint sensor) is 'back', while the one to the right is 'recent apps'. However, you can swap these around in the Buttons menu if desired. You can also activate or deactivate the backlighting for those buttons.

And if you really want to change things up, you can even edit the functionality of the three hard buttons. Each one can be programmed to open a specific app when double-tapped, as well as a different app when long-pressed, from that very same menu.

OnePlus 3 features guide: What is Dash Charge?

Dash Charge is the super-nippy OnePlus 3 charging tech which can power up the phone's battery in just over an hour, or give you an impressive 63 percent charge from just 30 minutes at the mains. That's significanty faster than Quick Charge 3.0. Check out our full Dash Charge review for more info.

OnePlus 3 features guide: How to change the OnePlus 3's LED notifications and play with app notification settings

In the settings menu, head to Customisation section and then tap LED Notifications. In here you can change the colour that the OnePlus 3's LED flashes when the battery is low, charging or full, plus the colour when you have a waiting notification.

From this menu you can also fiddle with each app's notification settings. So for instance, you can set whether an app can cause the LED to flash, whether it can alert you when the phone is set to Priority Notifications, whether it can show notifications on the lock screen and so on.

On that topic...

OnePlus 3 features guide: How to switch on Do Not Disturb and edit priority notifications

If you're about to head into a meeting and you want to switch on Do Not Distueb, so no notifications pester you, then simply flick the switch on the left edge of the phone.

When the switch is at the bottom position, you'll get all notifications. In the top position, you'll receive no notifications at all. And in the middle position, it's priority notifications only. This can be customised in the OnePlus 3 settings (Alert Slider > Priority Settings), so only your favourite contacts, important alarms and so on can get through.

OnePlus 3 features guide: How to use gesture control and the proximity sensor

The OnePlus 3 also supports lots of gestures, for quickly loading apps and so on. Head to the phone's settings menu and head to Gestures and you can turn these on and off.

With gesture support on, you can draw an 'O' on the phone's lock screen to load up the camera, or 'V' to turn on the LED flash (handy if you're struggling to find your way to the toilets at night). That's just two examples, and they can all be individually activated or deactivated.

The OnePlus 3 also boasts a proximity sensor, which can activate the screen when you take your phone out of your pocket. To turn this on, head to the phone's settings and then Display, and toggle the Ambient Display option.

OnePlus 3 features guide: How to fast-load the camera

To open the camera in just a second or two, simply double-tap the power button at any time. This immediately loads up the camera app, ready to take a snap.

OnePlus 3 features guide: How to shoot RAW images on the OnePlus 3's camera

To turn on RAW image capture in the OnePlus 3's camera, you need to tap the camera modes icon in the top left corner of the app. As well as the list of camera modes (video, slow mo and so on), you'll notice a cog icon appear in the top right corner of the screen. Tap this and you can turn on RAW photo capture as well as toggle location saving and shutter sound.
