AirAsia held a press conference in Johor Bahru on 29 May to celebrate the launch of the LCC’s first route to China from the airport.
The daily service faces no direct competition and is the airline’s 14th route to China, of which eight are from Kuala Lumpur, four from Kota Kinabalu, with one each from Langkawi and Johor Bahru.
AirAsia continues to expand in China with the addition on 29 May of a new, daily service between
Johor Bahru (JHB) and
Guangzhou (CAN). The 2,630-kilometre route will be operated daily by the LCC’s A320 fleet and faces no competition. Flight AK1394 departs Malaysia at 22:00 arriving in China at 02:00 the following day. Return flight AK1395 departs Guangzhou at 03:00 arriving back in Johor Bahru at 06:50. According to OAG Schedules Analyser data AirAsia now operates 14 routes into China, involving four Malaysian airports and 10 Chinese airports. Spencer Lee, AirAsia Head of Commercial, said: “Our southern hub of Johor Bahru is one of the key development points for us this year, and we are pleased to be connecting the rapidly developing Johor Bahru to Guangzhou, China through this unique route that will be operated exclusively by AirAsia. This will further increase our market share in Johor Bahru, and we look forward to working closely with all key industry players here to grow Johor Bahru together.” Derick Basir, CEO of Senai Airport Terminal Services, said: “Senai Airport is delighted to introduce the new route to China by AirAsia. With the ongoing development in Iskandar Malaysia, there has been a lot of demand for air travel between Johor and certain parts of China. As such, we believe that the new Johor Bahru to Guangzhou route introduced by AirAsia will be a success. We have been exploring the possibility of starting a Johor Bahru – China route with a few parties and AirAsia was the first airline to act on the opportunity. This demonstrates AirAsia’s seriousness and commitment to further develop Senai Airport as their secondary hub, after klia2. Now, the people of Johor can travel to China more conveniently compared to before. Previously, they had to travel to klia2 to take a flight to China. With the new daily flights between Johor and Guangzhou by AirAsia, Johoreans need not to do so anymore.”
