SANDAKAN, May 22 (Bernama) -- The oil palm industry has become a main agenda for Malaysia to achieve a high-income nation status by 2020 due to its importance in the country's economic development.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah said oil palm is no longer a side idea in the country's mainstream economy because of its huge potential in producing downstream products especially in biomass sector.
"The government highly encourages all palm oil factories in the country to venture into the biomass sector with more commitment and undertake various studies and efforts to produce biomass-based downstream products which ensure huge profits," he said when launching the 'New Business Opportunities in Oil Palm/Biomass Downstream' seminar here Thursday.
He said more initiatives would be taken to group the palm oil factories to enable them to form their own clusters and use their own biomass to produce pellet, bioethanol and others.
At the same time, Tan said the government would facilitate the establishment of a shared cluster to provide capability, skills, and advice needed by biomass owners.
This was to illustrate the fact that the inclination in exploiting oil palm biomass and the development of second generation biofuel was not a remote idea of the state and the Palm Oil Industrial Cluster.
He said the government also provided an additional RM56 billion in development grants this year to encourage more investors to develop the oil palm biomass industry.
