Here are four hidden Android N features and how to enable them [Video]

Now that we have the official release of Android Nougat on some devices, we’re finally seeing some of the latest changes to Android available in their final forms. But there’s still a lot more to this update that didn’t make the final cut. We know apps like Allo and features like Google Assistant are coming, but right here, right now, there are many hidden things you can play around with…
Shortly after the final release, developers were already digging into the source code to find fun things that Google might have in the works or anything else buried in the code. And apparently that hunt have unveiled four major features yet to be released. Let’s take a closer look.

1. Night mode

Night Mode was one of the best additions to Android N’s developer previews, but sadly Google opted not to fully include it in the final release. This feature, similar to Night Shift on iOS, tints the screen red to filter out blue wavelength light. Research has suggested that this light can negatively affect your sleep, so this feature cancels it out to a certain extent.
nightmode_nougat
Night Mode does still live within the OS, it’s just hidden, and surprisingly easy to bring back. To enable night mode, simply follow the steps below.
  1. Enable the System UI Tuner by long-pressing on the settings icon in the notification shade.
  2. Download Night Shift Enabler from Google Play.
  3. Once installed, open the app and tap Enable Night Mode. This should bring back the functionality, however, you may still need to close the app, reopen, and perform the process again.
Once this is done, you can easily toggle Night Mode on and off through the toggle in your quick settings, or you can set it to enable and disable based on the time of day (sunset/sunrise).

2. Freeform apps

One of the big areas of focus within Android Nougat was better optimization for tablets. For example, we finally have access to split screen multi-tasking, directly within stock Android. Another feature we heard about, but was never officially released, is freeform apps. This mode allows just about any app on your device to run in a window, just like an app or program on a desktop OS.
freeform_apps_nougat
This feature really shines on Android tablets, and while it isn’t completely finished, you can use it right now on your device running Android 7.0 Nougat. To enable the feature, perform the following steps.
  1. Enable Developer Options by visiting Settings > About Phone, then tap the Build Number until a message indicates developer options have been activated.
  2. Open , scroll to the very bottom of the screen, and enable Force Activities to Be Resizable
  3. Reboot your device
  4. Open the Google Play Store and download the free app Taskbar.
  5. Once installed, open Taskbar and scroll to the bottom to ensure Freeform Window Support is enabled.
  6. Turn on Taskbar by activating the toggle at the top of the screen. An app drawer icon should then show in the lower left corner of your display.
  7. Clear Recent Apps.
Once you have completed these steps, you’ll want to click on Taskbar’s app drawer icon, then select an app. Once you’ve done so, Taskbar should launch that app with Android’s freeform mode where you can then resize and move the app around on your display. Keep in mind that this feature is not finished, so some apps may not work or resize correctly.

3. Customizable software buttons

One of the best aspects of on-screen navigation buttons is the fact that they can change over time. On some skins, users can change the look of the navigation bar, the buttons found on it, and even the order those buttons land in. Stock Android, on the other hand, has never had those features.
Thankfully it seems that Google is working on adding further customization options to the OS through the System UI Tuner. Obviously, this is another feature which isn’t quite ready for the primetime, but you can enable it now by flashing a ZIP.
nougat_systemtuner_navigationbar
To do this, your device will need to have a custom recovery such as TWRP. After you have that taken care of, sdownload the appropriate files from this XDA page to enable the functionality, and flash them. Here’s a link to XDA’s guide on how to install TWRP if you need it.
Once everything is set up, head into the System UI tuner and you can then change the buttons along the navigation bar. Options for new buttons include a menu button, clipboard shortcut, and a custom keycode button. This option allows users to pick from an extremely long list of options including media controls and much more. You can also rearrange the order of those buttons if you choose.

4. “Marshmallow Land” Game

marshmallowland
Android’s Easter eggs always change over time, but few were as fun as the “Marshmallow Land” Flappy Bird clone built into Android Lollipop and Marshmallow. To access this, perform the following steps.
  1. Go to the Google Play Store and download the app “Activity Launcher”
  2. Once installed, navigate to System UI activities, and locate “Marshmallow Land”
  3. Tap the icon, assign a name, and create a shortcut. From here an icon will be added to your homescreen for easy access

For now these features remain hidden, although it’s not a long shot to expect that they’ll eventually be available on Android without any “hacking”. If you have any hidden Android Nougat features that you’ve discovered, drop a comment below and tell us about it!

new version of Android is here, and it looks to be a solid, if relatively low-key, upgrade. Whenever Android 7.0 (Nougat) gets to your device, you'll probably be happy with it.

It also means that it's time, once again, to see how Android has separated itself from iOS. If you've been thinking of pledging allegiance to a new platform, then here are some new, Nougat-y features that you won't find on any iPhone.

View As: One Page Slides

A new "multi-window" feature lets you use two apps simultaneously, regardless of whether you're on a phone or a tablet. Just long press the "Recent Apps" button once you're inside an app, and then pick another app to scroll alongside it. Apple introduced a similar multitasking view with last year's iOS 9 update, but that works only with iPads, not iPhones.

Business Insider/Jeff Dunn

It's worth noting that Samsung and LG have had split-screen modes on their Android skins for a few years, however.

Still, even if Nougat doesn't have the smoothest take on the concept — some apps don't work smoothly, and only Chrome lets you use the same app twice — it's still a boon for larger phones.

Another boon for big phones is the new Display Size setting. That's in the Accessibility folder of the Settings menu, and lets you shrink and enlarge the scale of the entire Android interface. Set it to "small" and you'll be able to see much more info onscreen. iOS has had a similar Display Zoom setting on recent iPhones, but that doesn't let you reduce things.

Business Insider/Jeff Dunn

This won't change the scale of every UI element within every app, but it works very well with Google's own software and lets you fit many more apps on your home screen at once. It also changes things instantly, whereas iOS forces you to reboot.

When you have multiple apps running, you can double-tap the Recent Apps button to quickly switch between the last two that you've used. That's a bit quicker than with iOS, where you double-tap the home button and then select from a carousel of open programs.

Business Insider/Jeff Dunn

Nougat also lets you take more control over Android's Quick Settings menu. There you'll find an "Edit" button, which lets you exchange and rearrange various options — Wi-Fi, location, etc. — as you see fit.

Business Insider/Jeff Dunn

Android has actually had these new tweaks available in the past, but you had to unlock them in the operating system's System UI Tuner, a hidden menu meant for developers.

This, in turn, means that you can change which settings show up alongside the notification panel. Developers will also be able to create their own shortcuts, though how much support that gets remains to be seen.

Business Insider/Jeff Dunn

I've complained about it before, but all of this furthers an advantage that Android has long had over iOS. The Control Center there is getting cleaner with iOS 10, but it still won't let you customize how things show up.

Each of the options in Android 7.0's Settings menu comes with a quick tidbit of information. It's not a huge deal, but it can save you a couple of taps when you want to, say, view how much storage you have available.

Business Insider/Jeff Dunn

A new slide-out menu lets you navigate all of your options a little quicker, too.

Business Insider/Jeff Dunn

Nougat also allows for Google's new Daydream virtual-reality platform. Though it isn't available just yet, it should help standardize how VR works on future Android phones. Apple has expressed its interest in augmented reality in the past, but as it stands, Android is the place to be if you're into mobile VR.

YouTube/Google Developers

Just know that existing Android phones won't be compatible with the new mode.

If it wasn't already obvious, then none of this is groundbreaking. In fact, many of Nougat's improvements are about matching things that iOS has already done. Much of iOS 10, meanwhile, is about matching details from Android. The real takeaway here is that we're still dealing with two very similar platforms, and that the day-to-day differences between them are getting less stark. Still, within that context, Nougat is a decent step forward.

ANDROID ONEPLUS 3 OXYGENOS

OnePlus has today announced a new software build for the OnePlus 3, Oxygen OS 3.5. This new “community build” is available directly fromOnePlus, although it won’t be available as a standard OTA. Community builds are essentially OnePlus’ version of a beta, allowing its fans to test out new software builds so any problems can be found before the full rollout.

In Oxygen OS 3.5, you won’t find too much that’s new. The official changelog only lists a small handful of changes, including some improvements to the UI, better camera software, more robust settings & customization features, and also new apps. These OnePlus apps include new and improved versions of stock apps such as the clock, weather, and file manager apps.

Focusing in on the UI changes for a moment, you’ll find that OnePlus has updated the notification shade with new color accents,Nougat-like quick settings (note: this build is still based on Marshmallow), along with some changes to the “shelf” feature on the launcher.

As this is an early build, OnePlus 3 users who flash will notice a few things that don’t work.

OxygenOS 3.5 includes some back-end changes that we’re confident will improve the user experience in the long run, but there are some bugs that we’re working out now. These include:Android Pay is not currently supportedOnly English is currently supported in several OnePlus appsSome performance issuesSome UI issues when using custom themesSystem UI tuner is unstable (do not use); using the system UI tuner could cause serious issues that can only be resolved via factory resetYou will need to re-register your fingerprints if you have fingerprint authentication enabled

To see all of the changes, a OnePlus 3 users has posted a brief video going through some of the changes (seen below). If you’re using a OnePlus 3 and would like to try out these changes for yourself, head over to OnePlus’ forums and grab the download for yourself.

OnePlus 3 receiving OxygenOS 3.5 community build update

Home › News › You are here

Categories: AndroidSoftware updates

The last update pushed to OnePlus 3, OxygenOS 3.2.4 did more harm than good, but it looks like the Chinese company is determined to fix any issues than customers might have with their smartphones.

OnePlus has just announced OxygenOS 3.5 is now available for those who rock a OnePlus 3 device. However, this isn't a final build yet, it's a community build that's meant to allow users to try OnePlus' software before anyone else.

Of course, the release of the community build will also provide OnePlus with the necessary feedback to fix any problem that might have slipped into the new update.

But what is OxygenOS 3.5 and what new features and improvement it brings? The most obvious are the UI enhancements OnePlus added, but there are also new and improved apps, including clock, weather and file manager.

There's also a better camera software, so OnePlus 3 users can expect slightly higher quality pictures. OnePlus also confirmed the update brings more solid settings and customization features.

Although these are the improvements that are most obvious, OnePlus states the many other changes have been made under the hood, such as streamlining OxygenOS to feature even more back-end enhancements. OnePlus wishes to increase the speed and frequency at which updates are delivered beginning with OxygenOS 3.5, so finger crossed for that.

Since this is a community build, expect some bugs to be present as well, or things aren't yet working as intended. For example, Android Pay is not supported in this build. The same goes for localization, as many OnePlus apps only support English.

Without actually naming them, OnePlus confirmed the community build has some performance problems, as well as UI issues when using custom themes. The System UI tuner is unstable, so it's not recommended to use it since it can cause serious issues that can't be fixed unless you do a factory reset.

Last but not least, if you're already taking advantage of the fingerprint authentication, then you must re-register your fingerprints after updating to OxygenOS 3.5.

Keep in mind that you can flash this community build by ADB sideload, but make sure you back up all your personal data just in case.

Install them, that's usually a good start. :p

Long press your homescreen, click customization and swipe right until you have the icon section.

Simple.

I had the same question after reading the article.
Themes or not, I would be happier if I 1+ launcher would be updated to utilize the space after removing google search bar from customizations. That imp piece of real estate is where I am keeping my eyes on

Interface is a little better, drop down menu now includes auto brightness option like Samsung devices which is nice.

sRGB mode as standard, auto brightness has been improved as well, no weird transitions when adjusting the slider now.

Also widgets and background applications now stay active after you close them, which for me was a problem since 3.2.2.

So I'm fairly happy with the update, it's a step in the right direction. .
