TEHRAN, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas' seven-day visit to Pakistan and Iran beginning Jan 15 has been very fruitful in promoting Malaysian palm oil.

It has paved the way for both countries to not only strengthen palm oil trade but also seek new markets for Malaysian palm oil.

Uggah was accompanied by the ministry's Deputy Secretary-General (Plantations and Commodities) M. Nagarajan, Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) Chairman Datuk Lee Yeow Chor, Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) Director-General Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May and MPOC Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Dr Yusof Basiron.

"There are new dynamics that influence and dictate the growth momentum of the palm oil trade between our two countries.

"We will continue to provide them with the tools and assistance to achieve their objectives to further enhance trade in Malaysian palm oil," Uggah said, adding that the business communities of both countries could redefine the approach by forming partnerships and strategic alliances.

Uggah first travelled to Karachi, Pakistan, to visit an edible-oil-refining facility owned by Mapak Qasim Bulkers Pvt Ltd, a joint-venture company between Felda and Westbury Group of Pakistan, which has has tank terminals to stock edible oil at Port Qasim.

He also officiated the Malaysia-Pakistan Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar (POTS) 2014 which was a invaluable platform for business leaders to meet and explore future trade and business linkages.

The minister also launched MPOB's pocketbook on "Palm Oil Uses" in Urdu which contains information on the Malaysian palm oil industry and the use of palm oil in food and non-food applications.

He met Pakistan-Malaysia Business Council Chairman M. Bashir Janmohammed and captains of industries in Pakistan, including Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association, Pakistan Edible Oil Refiners Association and Pakistan Soap Manufacturers Association.

During his discussions with Bashir, Uggah said his ministry would relook the export duty structure for crude palm oil to boost exports to Pakistan and encourage Pakistan companies to consider Malaysia as a platform to penetrate the South East Asian market.

He later continued his working visit to Iran and met with Iranian Vegetable Oils Industry Association President Mohammed Ghebleh and other leading Iranian business leaders to discuss growing opportunities for bilateral trade and investment.

Uggah officiated POTS Iran on Jan 20, the day the interim nuclear deal, entered into between Iran and six major powers on Nov 24, 2013, was implemented.
