Malaysia for resolving taxation issue

KARACHI: The governments of Pakistan and Malaysia need to take note of taxation issues faced by the business communities on both sides and resolve these in order to improve the volume of bilateral trade, said Malaysian Plantation, Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on Thursday.
He expressed these views at a press conference held at the Third Malaysia-Pakistan Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar (POTS).
Earlier in his keynote address, Uggah Embas had called Pakistan a ‘special trading partner’ for the Malaysian palm oil industry.
The present imports of Malaysian palm oil and palm oil products by Pakistan is recorded at 1.44 million tonnes in January-November 2013, valued at $1.34 billion, making the country the fifth largest importer in the world.
On the subject of competitors in the palm oil world, the visiting minister acknowledged that Indonesia offered competition, adding: “But we do not look at Indonesia as a competitor, rather as a partner.”
Answering a question whether Pakistani labour could be hired at Malaysian plantations, the minister said that this was something worth exploring.
The participants were informed that currently 60,000 Pakistani were employed in the service industry in Malaysia along with another 3,000 qualified professional workers.
The number increase to 100,000 if illegal Pakistanis are taken into account.
Representatives of the palm oil and associated industries were urged to develop oil and fats trade, including oleochemicals, biomass utilisation and animal feed.
The event organised by Malaysian Palm oil Council (MPOC) and Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) in collaboration with the Pakistan Vansapati Manufacturers Association, Pakistan Edible Oil Refiners Association and Pakistan Soap Manufacturers Association.High Commissioner of Malaysia Dr Hasrul Sani Mujtabar, Council General of Malaysia in Karachi Abu Bakar Mamat, Chairman MPOC Dato’ Lee Yeow Chor, CEO, MPOC Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Yusof Basiron, and Director-General MPOB Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May were also present at the event.
