Issue:

How the Filling Phase Solver Parameter values and Packing Phase Solver Parameters affect the number of time steps written in Moldflow.  Also, how these values affect the number of intermediate result time step intervals and the relationship between these parameters:

Solution:

Filling Phase Solver Parameters and Packing Phase Solver Parameters

The "Maximum %volume to fill per time step" and the "Maximum packing time step have" do not directly write results.  These values entered ensure that the filling solver iteration and packing solver iteration will write time steps no larger than the value entered.

Example:  If 0.5 seconds in entered for "Maximum packing time step" this will ensure that the packing solver iteration will write time steps no larger than 0.5 seconds.
If this value is a much larger increment in comparison to the number of intermediate time step results entered, the Moldflow solver cannot write as many intermediate results as are being requested

Intermediate Results

Tells the solver how many time steps to actually write. The options are:
  • None
  • Write at constant intervals (default selection)
  • Write at specified times

If a large number of intermediate time step results is entered, but the “Maximum packing time step” and “Maximum %volume to fill per time step” are not also modified accordingly, the solver cannot write the requested intermediate time steps and will only follow/capture results per the Max time step criteria values outlined in the Filling and Packing Phase Solver Parameters.

Example:  If 100 "Number of intermediate results in filling phase" are required, but 4% is still entered for  “Maximum %volume to fill per time step”, the solver cannot include 100 time steps for filling, but in fact closer to 25 time step.  In order to achieve 100 "Number of intermediate results in filling phase", the “Maximum %volume to fill per time step" should be adjusted to 1%

These values should be adjusted together to achieve the number of time steps requested.

Issue:

When specifying time steps for intermediate results in the advanced options of a Moldflow Insight analysis, the results after the analysis completes are not being shown at those specific times.  There are less time steps than what was specified.

Causes:

The solver parameters also need changed.

Solution:

In the advanced options, the solver parameters will also need adjusted to have more time steps solved during the analysis.  The default for "Maximum %volume to fill per time step" is 4%.  This should be reduced for more time steps to be output in the results during the filling phase.  The same can be done for the packing parameters.  Note: This will increase project size and analysis times.
